So many of us find ourselves traveling constantly during the summer months. Even though I’m not having that kind of summer, much of my adult life has involved lots of travel. It can be hard to catch your breath! And, I believe that being organized can make these experiences that much more enjoyable.
So this week’s episode of my Youtube series Organize with Me, is brought to you by my long 4th of July weekend at the beach.
Having grown up in eastern Massachusetts, for much of my life I was within a half an hour of the beach and it was a big part of my lifestyle. Man how I took that for granted. Though, if we had a beach here in the Valley I think it would be so perfect my head would explode.
Now, my beloved beach days require what feels like way too much planning. Scheduling the time, arranging the accommodations, figuring out care for my pooch, and driving for hours there and back. And after all that, the weather may not cooperate. Still worth it though.
So you can imagine, with everything that goes into making it happen, I would want to keep everything else as simple as possible. I’ve written before about how I like to pack light, despite my slight obsession with beauty products. One way that I make this easier on myself is having my travel toiletries and beauty products pretty much ready to go.
The thing about traveling, though, is that you’re not in your normal environment. It’s easy to lose things and leave things behind. At the same time, for me, having all of my essential beauty products with me can bring me a lot of comfort when I’m traveling.
The last time I set up my travel toiletry kit was about three years ago - and you’ll see at the beginning of this video that, heading into this trip, I was comically low on everything. So I decided to film myself as I updated my kit the night before my trip!
If you’re looking for some inspiration for streamlining your packing, this is the episode for you.
Here are a few more tips that I like to use for packing my toiletry kit.
♡ Choose an easily washable toiletry bag. It’s helpful for it to be easy to clean since it’s not uncommon for things to spill or leak. Even if containers are sealed tight, it’s not uncommon for product to escape from normal usage. I chose my clear PVC container (find a similar one here) because it’s easy to see what I have in there, it’s sturdy, and it’s easy to wipe down.
♡ Choose quality travel containers. Not all travel-sized bottles are created equal. There are some pretty flimsy ones out there, that leak, crack, and/or break. If you have containers that do any of the above, ditch them. My go-to inexpensive quality travel toiletry containers are the ones found in the travel section at Target. My preference is to use clear bottles because it helps me see what’s inside and how much is left so I’ll know to fill it when I’m running low.
♡ Store your kit somewhere cool and dry. This is to preserve the integrity of your product, especially if you use a lot of natural products. This is especially important if you use clear bottles. I keep mine in my suitcase, which is stored in our basement cedar closet when not in use. That way, when it’s time to pack, I just pull out my suitcase, add any products or tools that aren’t part of my kit, and I’m ready to go!
